Kathrikkai (Eggplant) Gotsu

Not sure if it is gotsu or gojju. We say gotsu at our house and i will just stick to it...

Ingredients :

2 large eggplants
2 spoons channa daal
3,4 red chillies
salt
hing
mustard seeds
tamarind paste about 1/2 spoon (acc. to taste)

Method :

Broil the eggplants in high for 30 minutes.
Peel the charred skin and take the contents and mash it
In a pan, heat some oil pop mustard seeds and add hing, channa daal, urad daal and red chillies
and saute till the daals turn golden brown.
Add the mashed eggplant and tamarind paste and little water and cook till done.
Since the eggplant is already cooked it gets done pretty fast.
It tastes very good with upma or pongal.
Garnish with chopped cilantro.
Note : you can prepare this with small eggplants that you get in indian store too. You just have to show them in the flame and follow the same procedure. i haven't tried broiling the small ones.
I am sending this for JFI-Tamarind hosted by Sig as part of the JFI Event
