Quick fix, low fat Paruppusili

I would not call it instant, but it is relatively quick and easy compared to the traditional paruppusili. It is less messy also. Ever since i started going back to work i have been experimenting a lot in the kitchen trying to find quick and easy recipes that do not compromise on the nutrition. I tried this and it was an instant success at home. My husband and my first son loved it instantly and now my second kiddo likes it too :)

Ingredients :
1 pack cut frozen beans ( I use the french style cut beans)
3 green chillies
1 cup besan (chickpea flour)
1 spoon red chilli powder
hing
salt to taste
Method 1 :
Mix besan, redchilli powder, hing and salt. Add water and make it like dosa/pancake batter.
Heat a pan and make thick pancakes with this batter.
Let it cool.
In the meanwhile, steam the frozen beans in microwave for 6 minutes.
Heat little oil, add mustard seeds and when it pops add urad daal, hing and green chillies and saute till urad daal is golden brown.
Add the steamed beans, salt and cook till it is almost done.
Now, cut the pancakes into pieces and dry grind to coarse powder. Add this powder to the beans and cook for some more time. It tastes really good.
Method 2 :
Cook beans as mentioned in method 1. Instead of making pancakes out of the besan, just mix the besan, redchilli powder, salt and hing. Do not add water.
Once the beans is cooked, add this powder to the beans and cover the pan and cook for some time. Stir it and cover it again. Repeat till it is done.

Goes well with Rasam Rice or Sambar Rice.
Note: This is low-fat only if you use non stick pan. If you use regular pan, it takes lot of oil - as much as regular paruppusili.

This recipe uses 1 cup of chickpea flour and that has 21 g of protein. Now, that's an excellent source of protein isn't it? I am going to send this to "Eat Healthy - Protein Rich CONTEST" hosted by http://letusallcook.blogspot.com/

That's and interesting idea Vidya. I'll try it once. What I do is I prepare usili on a holiday, the traditional method and freeze it after steaming and powdering it. When I want it, I remove it from the freezer and defrost in the microwave and it's ready for the week day.
